Description

Outstanding carte view of Captain Joseph Strong of the 28th Iowa Infantry. Joseph would muster as a private with “I” Company in September, 1862. Over the next two and a half years, he would receive promotions to sergeant major, adjutant and lastly to captain in October, 1864. The regiment would participate in a number of hard fought campaigns to include the Vicksburg Campaign, Siege of Vicksburg, Red River Campaign and Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Of the many battles fought throughout those campaigns, Joseph would be wounded in two of them. First during the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads on on April 4, 1864. “Adjt. J. G. Strong, while heroically and fearlessly doing his duty, was knocked from his horse by a minie-ball, inflicting a severe wound in the right shoulder, and was taken from the field. Having his wound dressed, [he] returned to the field, and continued rallying the men in the thickest of the fire.” . His second wounding would come at Winchester five months later. “An exploding shrapnel shell sent three pieces of buckshot into his right hip. Another ball struck his left hand, completely penetrating and destroying the knuckle joint of the third finger. Adjt. Joseph G. Strong was wounded in the early part of the engagement, had his wounds dressed on the field, and refused to leave the same, although advised to do so by surgeons, but continued to rally and cheer the men until victory was ours. He is a brave and fearless officer and worthy of promotion.” . This view was taken while Joseph was serving as adjutant sometime between February, 1863 and October, 1864. Very nice bold signature located on the front reading “J. G. Strong Adjt 28th Iowa Infantry”. No back mark on this one.
