Superb carte view identified as Captain Oliver R. Small of the 15th Maine Infantry. Oliver would muster as a sergeant with “F” Company in August, 1862. Over the next several years, he would receive multiple promotions, eventually rising to the rank captain in November, 1864. Additionally, Oliver was notably detailed as acting Assistant Adjutant-General at the headquarters of the First Brigade, Second Division, Second Army Corps. Near the end of the war, he would be awarded the brevet rank of Major on March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the war. While this view itself is not signed, a second view of Oliver taken is housed in the Maine Digital Repository. This wonderful pose shows the officer wearing his captains shoulder boards while wearing a 2nd Corps badge pinned to the breast of his coat. Notable actions for the regiment would include battles at Aransas Pass, Fort Esperanza, Sabine Cross Roads, and Pleasant Hill. They also famously raised the first Union flag on Texas shores during the campaign. This view is blind stamped on the front bottom out of Gardiner, Maine. Very nice view.
