Description
Exceptional wallet belonging to Captain Otto Friedrich of the 68th New York Volunteer Infantry. Known as the “2nd German Rifle Regiment” due to the large number of German men who made up the regiment, Otto would muster as a private with “B” Company in May of 1862. He would number among the 58 men wounded from the regiment during the fight at 2nd Bull Run on August 30th. Otto would survive the wound and receive a promotion to 2nd lieutenant followed immediately by a promotion to 1st lieutenant with “K” Company. Following the battle at Chancellorsville, he would be promoted to captain of “I” Company before heading into the Gettysburg Campaign in July. It was there that Otto would fight his last battle. Severely wounded on July 2nd, he would succumb to the wounding the following day. This example measures 7.5″ in length and is stenciled inside the front cover “Otto Friederich Capt. 68th N.Y. Vols.”. There are other items related to Otto in circulation including at least one small pocket mirror that is also stenciled. It is missing the leather closing strap but is otherwise in very decent condition.
