Description
Very nice carte view identified as Captain Pliny Babbitt of the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Babbitt would be commissioned a 1st lieutenant with “F” company in October of 1862. A 9-month regiment, they would arrive in Baton Rouge the following March, taking a principal role in the assault on Port Hudson on June 14th resulting in the loss of 18 killed and mortally wounded and another 68 wounded. Pliny, now serving as a captain, would join the men some 10 days after the fight, on their return home, arriving in late August where they would be mustered out of service on September 2nd. This view of the captain shows the officer dressed in this splendid uniform and cradling his sword while wearing a silk glove. His cap is displayed in the other hand with the numeral “53” clearly visible within the infantry horn of the cap. Excellent clarity on this view to the point that the stitching on the belt is visible to the naked eye. Beautiful image back marked out of New York.
