Wonderful carte view of Captain William Fosgate of the 14th New Hampshire Infantry. Bust portrait of the New Hampshire officer. William would be commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant with “F” Company in October, 1862. The following November, he would be promoted to 1st lieutenant, with his promotion to captain coming the following February. The regiment would be employed as pickets and various other role’s within the Washington defenses through the remainder of 1862 and all of 1863. In August of 1864, the regiment would be assigned to the Army of the Shenandoah taking part in the Valley Campaign.  The first battle of the campaign would be fought at Opequan, Virginia on September 19th. Advancing across an open plain, they would be engaged in a deadly firefight with the Confederate forces. Shot to pieces, the regiments survivors dispersed to the rear. William would be killed instantly in the charge as he was leading his company, being “shot through the heart”. This view bears a period ink inscription across the front bottom reading “Lt. W. A. Fosgate Killed at Deep Bottom, Va. July, 1864″. Back marked out of Concord, NH.
