Description
Nice little ninth plate ambrotype of a Federal cavalry trooper. Dressed in a double breasted great coat issued to cavalryman, he displays a red and white “pill box” cap. There appears to be a corps badge pinned to the top, but I can’t quite tell which corps. Possibly the 16th or 19th Corps. Similar in use as a “smoking cap”, he was no doubt wearing the cap while encamped in winter quarters, although they have been documented worn in the field during active military campaigns. This one does come housed in a near mint thermoplastic case.
