Description
Wonderful carte view of Colonel James B. Swain of New York. On October 1st, 1861, Swain was granted authority from the War Department to recruit a cavalry regiment which would later become the 11th New York Cavalry. Known as the “Scotts 900”, they would fight in a number of lesser known battles during their tenure. 23 men and officers from the regiment would be lost in battle with a great many more lost to disease. Colonel Swain would lead the men of the 11th through the trials of the next 3 years until his discharge in February, 1864. This is a beautiful view of the colonel photographed by Brady. A faint period ink id graces the reverse of the card reading, “Col. Jas. B. Swain”. Back marked by Brady. Accompanying this view is a rare uncirculated “Scotts Nine Hundred United States Cavalry” 10 cent sutler’s note. This example is marked by sutler J. R. Bostwick. Nice little pairing of items from this regiment.
