Carte view of John Ruthrauff of “A” Company, 146th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. John would muster as a corporal in August, 1864. The regiment would be organized at Camp Butler, Illinois for the period of 1 year. They would perform garrison duty at various posts within the state for their entire term. This view shows Ruthrauff dressed in his infantry frock with corporals chevrons. “A” Company would spend the year garrisoned at Camp Butler. This example is back marked out of Springfield, Illinois where Camp Butler was located. This does have a cancelled tax stamp on the reverse dated November, 1864. This same pose of John can be found on the HDS.
