Description
This is a really neat item and the first of these I have had of this nature. Titled “GENERAL ORDER No. 80″, this small broadside chronicles the case against Lieutenant John Garland of the 42nd New York Infantry who was charged with sympathizing with the enemy. Unfortunately for John, a letter he had written to a friend which expressed his discontent for the President and the war being waged against the south had been intercepted and inspected thus reveling his true feelings. The case against him make for a very interesting read. The court found him guilty and Garland was dishonorably discharged from the service on April 2, 1863. Measures 6.75″ x 4.75”.
