Two page letter written by William Eldridge of the 175th New York Infantry to his wife back home in New York. Dated July 1, 1865, from Hilton Head, South Carolina. Written on U.S. Christian Commission letter head. Days earlier, William and the men of the 175th had been discharged in Savannah, Georgia. William is writing to his wife to let her know that he would be home soon and describes his trip northward as the men head home. His final line reads “I will be home soon if I have good luck”. William would serve as a drummer for the 175th before being reduced in rank to a private. He would muster with “D” company beginning in late September of 1864, serving until June, 1865. This one comes with the original Christian Commission cover as well. No tears or separation at the folds. Easy to read with nice bold ink.
