Description

Ohio service medal issued to Private Edward Thompson of the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Produced by Tiffany & Co. in 1866, the medals were issued to those troops from the state who had re-enlisted for the war effort. Roughly 20,000 would be produced. Edward would muster with “D” Company in December, 1861 serving all four years of the war, finally being discharged in July, 1865. While the regiment would fight in nearly two dozen battles, their most prominent roles would come during the Battle of Second Manassas and the Battle of Gettysburg. The reverse of the medal is stamped “The State of Ohio to Edwr Thompson Veteran Co. D. 73rd Regt. Ohio Volunteer Inft”. This one remains in excellent shape.
