Description
Superb hand carved id badge belonging to Ensign Tabor of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry. Tabor would be drafted into the regiment in November of 1863 during the Chattanooga Campaign. He would arrive with the regimen tin time to participate in the Atlanta Campaign and later, the Wilson’s Raid of 1865. He would be discharged in July, 1865. This is an exceptional badge and larger then is generally seen with this type. It is carved from either a piece of abalone or large clam shell and is quite heavy. It is 1/8″ thick and 1.5″ in width. Carved into the face of the badge are the words, “E. TABER Co. E. 1st WIS CAVELRY”. Note his misspelling of the word “cavalry”. The letters have been filled with red paint with a small tree and vines encompassing the badge itself. This one does still retain the original pin back as well. Just a super cool piece!
