Description

Superb and extensive document grouping related to the 17th USCT! There are a total of 29 various documents contained in this group. They date from early March, 1864 through January, 1866. Documents consist of numerous rosters, requisition forms and receipts for clothing, weapons, ammunition, equipment, ect. The 17th USCT would be raised during the spring of 1863 to supplement the ranks of Grants army as casualties continued to mount in his offensive of that year. The regiment would take part in the Battle of Nashville and pursuit of Hood’s army among other duties. The majority of these documents are signed by lieutenant and later captain Augustus Kliese who would first serve with the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry before being discharged for a promotion and transfer into the 17th USCT. There are however two documents signed by William Rufus Shafter who would serve as the colonel of the regiment and who would also be awarded the Medal of Honor for action at the Chickahominy River in May, 1862. Shafter would later receive a brevet to brigadier general and serve as a commanding officer during the Spanish-American War in Cuba. This grouping comes with an enormous amount of research material as well. Really superb and large document grouping that you don’t get to see very often.
