Description
Sixth plate ruby ambrotype of an unknown Federal soldier. This is a wonderful character study of this young man. He shows not a hint of expression but wears a rather serious look upon his face as he gazes into the camera. Dressed in a sack coat, he wears the collar rolled way down. The silk handkerchief which he has tied around his neck gives clue to the reason why. I can only assume that the scratchy, wool collar of the coat was bothersome on his neck and in order to alleviate the aggravation, he tied the handkerchief around his neck where the collar would rub and rolled the collar down out of the way. His overgrown hair flowing from under his cap, he wears the head piece in a care free fashion with the visor pointed upward. Really a wonderful image. Housed in a half leatherette case.
