Description
Wonderful quarter plate tintype of this Federal soldier photographed in front of the “US PICTURE TENT” back drop. He appears to be a cavalryman as he sports a pair of re-enforced trousers. However he does appear to be armed with a M1840 saber so artilleryman is also possible. Casually dressed, he is photographed here during the lull of winter camp in 1864. He stands on the bare ground wearing a pair of civilian shoes more accustomed to tooling around winter camp than muddy field operations. This is probably one of my favorite back drops used during the war. There are numerous known photos taken here from all branches of military service including members of the USSS. This image has a great look to it. It does come housed in a full leatherette case with mother-of-pearl inlay.
