Description
Seldom found carte view of General Grants Headquarters located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Richardson House was located at 320 Walnut Street and had served as the headquarters for a number of prominent Confederate generals beginning in 1862. As Federal troops moved into the city, Grant would take up residence in the palatial Greek Revival home making it his headquarters for a brief period. Grant would later move from the home to the T.J. Lattner house on the corner of 1st and Walnut Street. This view shows the large, two story home with it’s large white pillars and second story balcony. A white picket fence runs the length of the front of the property as two Federal guards stand in the street in front of the home. An old period ink id on the reverse simply reads “Grant H. Q. Chatta”. No back mark on this one. Hard to find view.
