Description
Beautiful ninth plate ambrotype identified as private B. B. Brockenbrough of Virginia. This one was purchased directly from the family located in the Shenandoah Valley. He would muster with the 9th Virginia Cavalry at the end of January, 1863. The young horse soldier is shown here dressed in a British imported grey, greatcoat and cape. Seldom seen in Confederate images. The 9th Virginia would fight with the Army of Northern Virginia in some of the wars most significant battles. Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and a dozen more. At wars end they would surrender with 1 officer and 26 men. Brockenbrough appears to have been suffering from illness for a good part of his enlistment throughout 1863 and 64′. He is shown absent or sick on 3 separate occasions during the first year and a half. He was however present when the final role was taken in October, 1864. Super nice image housed in a half leatherette case.
