Description

G.A.R. “HONOR THE NOBLE DEAD” ribbon from the G.A.R. Post No. 140 which was located in Champaign, Illinois. Very nice black silk ribbon with silver lettering. This example features applied American flags and a Grand Army of the Republic celluloid in the center. The Colonel Nodine which is labeled on the ribbon itself is in reference to Colonel Richard Nodine of the 25th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Richard was a life long resident of Champaign County and would be commissioned major of the 25th Illinois before being promoted to colonel. The Post was actually established in his honor.  In the minutes of a meeting of Western Star Lodge, dated May 4, 1872, money was allotted to provide a nurse to care for him and to relieve the family. He would however succumb to dysentery, a disease which he contracted during the war, one month later.
