Carte view identified as sergeant Jabez Mitchell of the 30th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Jabez would muster with “B” Company in in August, 1861. He would re-enlist in January of 1864 before mustering out of service in July, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. In November of 1861, the regiment would take part in the Battle of Belmont capturing Watson’s New Orleans Battery. The following year they would assist in the siege and capture of Fort Donelson as well as the siege of Corinth. Numerous other engagements would follow. Champion Hill, Vicksburg, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Bentonville and a handful of others. Jabez is shown here wearing his sergeants rank and service stripes with an id badge is pinned to the breast of his coat. A period pencil notation on the reverse reads “Jabez Mitchell Taken July 7, 1865″. Back marked out of Louisville where Jabez would be mustered out of service just days after sitting for this view and writing the inscription.
