Description

Small letter grouping attributed to Captain John Pugh Green. John would be commissioned a captain in the US Volunteers Adjutant General’s Department in September, 1862. He would subsequently serve under General Thomas Kane and several other’s over the course of the war. In total there are 4 separate letters from different individuals and one from Green himself, totaling 11 pages. The letters addressed to Green were written by Captain Cecil Clay and Captain Thomas Leiper, both of the 58th Pennsylvania Infantry, Captain Herman Hamburger who served as an Assistant Adjutant General in the 1st Brigade of the Army of the Potomac and Captain Henry Goodfellow of the 26th Pennsylvania Infantry. The first letter is addressed to Green in January, 1863 by Captain Cecil Clay. The following year, Cecil would be wounded in both arms during the Battle of Fort Harrison and rise to the rank of lieutenant colonel. The next letter to Green is dated December 23, 1863 from Thomas Leiper from his fortified post in Washington, North Carolina. He discusses some rebel cavalry that were captured and the success of the Army of the Potomac among other things. Leiper would survive the war and be discharged in October, 1864. A third undated letter, but most likely dating to sometime in 1862, written by Captain Herman Hamburger discusses the raising of two new companies and would like to appoint Green as a second lieutenant in one of the companies. The last letter is a post war congratulatory letter dated August of 1866 written by Captain Henry Goodfellow congratulating Green on his engagement. Goodfellow would be promoted to lieutenant colonel during the war for the role he played at Gettysburg. The last letter is a small war date military dispatch written by Green himself requesting a copy of the order which assigned him to serve as aide-de-camp to General Kane in December, 1862. The condition of all the letters within the group is very good with all quite legible and written in ink. Overall a very nice letter grouping from a very accomplished officer.
