Description

Carte view identified as Benjamin Loxley of the 58th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Mustering as a sergeant major with “B” Company in September, 1861, he would receive promotions to 2nd lieutenant in August of 1863 and 1st lieutenant the following March. The regiment would be kept busy over the next 4 years, participating in numerous expeditions and battles. Sandy Ridge, Kinston, Batchelor’s Creek, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and several others. Loxley would be mustered out of service in November, 1864. This view bears a beautiful ink inscription in Benjamins hand on the reverse reading, “Very Truly Yours, B. Ogden Loxley. Lieut and A.R. 2. M. 58 P.V.”. This view comes from the personal album of Captain and Assistant Adjutant General, John Pugh Green who would serve under General Thomas Kane and others.
