Signed carte view of George Balloch of the 5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. When the Civil War started, George enlisted in the Union Army in October 1861, and was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company D. He would serve with the regiment until July of 1862 when he was discharged from the 5th New Hampshire, and commissioned as a captain in the Commissary of Subsistence Department, US Volunteers. Rising to Lieutenant Colonel the following May, he would first serve as Chief Commissary of Subsistence on the staff of Major General Oliver O. Howard, then as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Union Army of the Cumberland’s XX Corps. Brevetted to colonel and Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “faithful and meritorious services during the war”. Balloch would continue to serve in the volunteer force until September 1, 1868 when he was finally mustered out of service. This views bears a period ink signature on the front bottom reading, “Col. G. W. Balloch”. The reverse bears a second signature reading, “truly yours Geo. W. Balloch Lt. Col & C.S. 11th Corps”. Back marked by Brady.
