Description
Beautiful carte view identified as 1st lieutenant Henry E. Stichter of the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry. A painter by trade and life long member of the Odd Fellows, Henry would muster as a corporal with “D” Company in September, 1861. He would receive a promotion to 2nd lieutenant in September, 1863 and to 1st lieutenant a year later. The regiment would certainly a fair share of the fighting which occurred over the next 4 years. They would take part in Pope’s Campaign into Northern Virginia as well as the Maryland Campaign in 1862. Additionally they would play a role in the Knoxville Campaign of 1863 as well as the Rapidan Campaign of 1864 and the Siege of Petersburg. Henry would be mustered out of service in October, 1864. He is shown here dressed in this splendid uniform and wearing an Odd Fellows badge pinned to the breast of the frock. Following his death in 1889, he would be interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Back marked out of Maine, Henry presumably sat for this view enroute back home following his discharge. I have attached an additional view of Henry from his time serving as a corporal for comparison.
