Singed carte view of Captain John Hitt of the 4th Illinois Cavalry, Company D. John would muster with the regiment during the third year of the war in February, 1864. Despite his late arrival into the regiment he would still see a small amount of fighting with a number of skirmishes and most notably the Battle of Egypt Station. He would however eventually resign his commission near the end of April, 1865. The reverse bears a period ink signature reading “J. W. Hitt Capt. 4th Ill. Cav” as well as an Illinois address to which the image was mailed. Back marked out of Natchez, Mississippi.
