Description
Small grouping of item’s linked to three brother’s from Wisconsin. Brother’s James, Andrew and John would all muster in different regiments from their home state of Wisconsin. James would muster as a private with the 40th Wisconsin serving just a 3-month stint before being discharged that September. Andrew would muster as a corporal with the 8th Wisconsin Infantry in July, 1861. He would serve through the entire duration of the war, mustering out in September, 1865. He would however be recovering from illness at the time of discharge and would not be present. John would muster with “E” Company of the 13th Wisconsin Infantry in December of 1861. Like his brother James, John would also muster as a private, but unlike his two brothers, he would not survive the war. He would succumb to disease on August 1, 1862 at Columbus, Kentucky. The grouping consists of James Murphy’s framed discharged certificate and G.A.R. Membership badge. The framed badge bears an identical sticker on the reverse of the frame as the one shown on his discharge certificate identifying it to James. Also included are 5 war date letters, written on patriotic stationary by John. The last letter, dated June 6, 1862, John mentions arriving at Columbus, Kentucky, where he would ultimately meet his fate. The final letter is a post war letter written by “Dave Ham” in February, 1900. Addressed to Andrew, the letter reminisces about their time together during the war and marching on Jackson, Mississippi. Interesting little grouping.
