Description

Muster-out roll for two members of the 49th Pennsylvania Infantry. This is a two-sided document measuring 15″ x 10″. This one is for two men from “E” Company, John Carter and Jacob Clinger. Jacob would be drafted into the regiment in December of 1863 and would be killed in action during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864. You can see the notation for his record reads “Settled May 12 1864 Killed in Action”. John Carter would be drafted into the regiment as well on the same day as Jacob. At 40 years old, Jacob was past his prime for the hard life of soldiering and would receive a medical discharge in March of 1864. This one is signed by Captain F. W. Wombacker, who would be wounded as well at Spotsylvania Court House. Very legible and written in bold ink with no rips to the document.
