Description

Small pocket bible belonging to Nathan Cook of the 26th New York Cavalry. 19 year old Nathan Cook would muster with “H” company near the end of the war in late February of 1865. He would serve with the regiment until his discharge in July, 1865. Companies H, I, K and L were all mustered during February of 1865, for the period of 1 year to serve on the Northern Frontier. With the close of the war, their service was no longer needed and they were discharged after just 5 months. This example definitely saw some use and is very well worn. There is an old period inscription inside the front cover reading “From Solon R. Agu???”. There is also some pencil writing there that I cannot decipher and what appears to be a date of 1862. A old note which was tucked inside the bible reads “This little book came to Mrs. Frank Hietter 81 Prince St. from her uncle (by marriage) Hiram Cook who lived on Sixth Hale Street belonged to his uncle Nathan Cook who lived on South State St. and served in the 26th New York Cav. in the Civil War”. The first page is missing out of this one, the rest of the pages appear to be intact. The cover is definitely very well worn as are all of the pages.
