Description
Extremely nice carte view identified as Asa Holt, Jr. Holt would be commissioned a major in the U.S. Volunteers Paymaster’s Department near the end of June, 1862. A promotion by brevet to lieutenant colonel would come in June, 1865. He would serve as paymaster until his resignation in December, 1865. During the course of the war the Paymaster’s Dept. would disburse $1,100,000,00 with a shortfall of only one-tenth of one percent. Quite a remarkable accomplishment considering all accounting was done with paper and pen! The reverse bears a very nice period ink signature reading “Asa Holt Jr Paymaster NY”. Back marked by Gurney and Son. Very nice carte view!
