Description

Very nice pension document issued to the mother of 1st sergeant John W. Leonard of the 67th New York Infantry. This example is dated from May of 1889. John would enlisted on May 10th, 1861 at Clyde, New York for a three-year term. He would muster as a private with “D” company with a promotion to corporal and later sergeant that same year and finally to first sergeant the following year. John would re-enlist in December of 1863. In May of 1864, the regiment would take part in the campaign from the Rapidan to the James with the men of the 67th taking in active role in the campaigns first battle, The Wilderness. Initially, John would be reported as captured during the battle but was later determined to have been killed in the fray on May 6th. This pension document which was granted to his mother Catharine, granted her $8 per month beginning in May, 1864. Beginning in March of 1886, the pension was then raised to $12 per month. Overall a very solid document with no rips or tears.
