Description
Exceptional Hardee’s Infantry Tactic’s Manual presented to Lieutenant E. B. Jones of the 22nd Indiana Volunteers by MOH recipient Philip Sydney Post of the 59th Illinois Infantry. A very nice period ink inscription inside the front cover reads, “Lieut. E. B. Jones. With compliments of P. Sidney Post”. Jones would muster with the 22nd Indiana Infantry as a sergeant in August, 1862, and would rise through the ranks, achieving the rank of of captain in January, 1865. For Phillip’s part, he would be commissioned into the 59th Illinois Infantry in July of 1861. He would receive promotions to adjutant, major, colonel and finally to brigadier general in March, 1864. Philip would be severely wounded during the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862, but it was his actions during the fight for Nashville that would earn Post the Medal of Honor. During the battle on December 16, 1864, Colonel Post led his brigade in an attack upon a strong Confederate position at Overton Hill, Tennessee. Despite very heavy grape, canister and musketry fire, plus being wounded, he reached the enemy works and secured their position. He would be brevetted to the rank of brigadier general for his actions there as well as receiving the MOH. His official citation reads, ” Led his brigade in an attack upon a strong position under a terrific fire of grape, canister, and musketry; was struck down by a grapeshot after he had reached the enemy’s works.”. Very nice manual with all the pages intact and the binding nice and solid.
