Description
Gemtype view identified as Harry Jones of the 48th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Harry would muster with “H” Company in mid February, 1864. Although joining the regiment late in the war, Harry would see no shortage of fighting. He would take part in the assault on Petersburg in which two members from the regiment would earn the MOH. They would next be employed in excavating the mine from the great Mine Explosion before taking part in the fight at Popular Springs. In December the regiment was stationed at Fort Sedgwick, where it remained until April 2, 1865, when it joined the assault on Fort Mahone, after which it occupied Petersburg and was detailed to guard prisoners, etc., until the middle of July, when it returned to Alexandria and was mustered out on July I7, 1865. This view has an old pencil inscription on the front reading “An old family friend. Harry Jones a Civil War Vet.”. The numeral “48” and his company letter “H” are plainly visible on the front of the cap.
