Description
Very nice letter written by Private Richard Parker of the 127th New York Infantry. 4 pages long written in nice bold ink and very legible. Richard would muster with the regiment in September of 1862 and serve until June of 1865. He would pen this letter on April 18th while in Charleston, South Carolina, just days after Lee’s surrender. The entire 1st page of the letter discusses his excitement and the excitement of everyone in general upon learning of the news of Lee’s surrender. The following two pages discuss his patriotic spirit and spirit of his fellow troops at putting down the rebellion and their duty in doing so despite the cost. The final page discusses what I believe is the Battle of Honey Hill. While he does not mention the name of the specific battle, he notes that it was the first battle the regiment was engaged in after marching out of Beaufort. “the regiment was taken to a new position to support at battery and had to lay down in front of the guns and let both our own and the enemy guns fire over us, the object of that was to be ready to repulse a charge of the enemy’s infantry and cavalry if they should attempt to capture our guns”. Overall a very nice letter with some interesting content.
