Quarter plate melainotype of an unidentified Federal infantry line officer. More than likely an early war image. Elaborately dressed for what appears to be a 2nd lieutenant. Outfitted in his frock and sporting a pair of leather gauntlets. A M1858 Hardee hat is worn with the side pinned up and a large ostrich plume. An infantry horn is sewn to the front but the gilding has obscured the regiment number. His red sash is worn around the waist under his eagle waist belt. A large holstered revolver is worn on the belt while he steadies his empty scabbard at his side and resting on his M1840 sword. Slight amount of crazing to the plate. Housed in a full leatherette case.
