Description
Extremely rare carte view of an African American sailor. This young sailor stands dressed in his very sharp looking naval uniform with his cap resting on the table at his side. Back marked out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he was no doubt affiliated with the military naval yard which is located there. His actual role is unknown but he may have worked as a servant for one of the many naval officers. Regardless of his military role, this is a very rare view.
