Description

Extremely rare copy titled “The Recruit”. The original publication was first published in 1845. The example is a second edition print published in 1847. The book was a compilation of exercises and movements for Infantry, Light-Infantry, and Riflemen and was written by United States Captain John T. Cairns. This example is identified inside the front cover to Simon W. Swisher who would serve as a captain with the 114th Virginia Militia and later as a corporal with the 18th Virginia Cavalry . Singed inside the front cover, “Simon W. Swisher, his book July 9th, 1861″. It is signed below a second time by Simon in pencil with a date of which appears to be “Oct 28, 1860”. Additionally, it is signed inside the back cover by Simon’s brother, Samuel. Samuel would serve alongside Simon serving in the 114th Virginia Militia. A third signature by George W. Stewart who would also serve in the 114th also graces the back cover. The reverse cover is signed, “G. W. Stewart 1861 Samuel M. Swisher”. There is also a faint pencil signature inside the front cover with the last name of “Wilson”. Overall this copy is in very good shape. The binding is tight with all pages intact. Some staining to both the front and back cover. 175 pages and measuring 5.5″ x 4″. Rare book signed by three Confederate soldiers!
