Description
Seldom seen G.A.R. ribbon from the John Goodwin, Jr. Post 82 located in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The post was named in honor of John, who had been a resident of the town, as a result of his death during the Battle of Roanoke Island. John would initially muster with the 8th Massachusetts Infantry in late April, 1861. A 3-month regiment, he would be discharged in August but would in turn muster with the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry in December of that year, commissioned 2nd lieutenant of Company B. Two months later, he would be killed while fighting at Roanoke Island when he was struck in the chest by a cannon ball. This white silk ribbon dates from the 24th National Encampment held in August, 1890 at Boston Massachusetts. A portrait of John is featured in the center of the ribbon. This one is slightly stained but is otherwise in very good shape.
