Description
Extremely rare quarter plate pannotype of this unidentified male subject. Pannotype’s are seldom encountered, especially in this condition. The images were constructed by transferring an underexposed, wet collodion negative from its original glass plate to a black-waxed textile or piece patent leather. This example is in fact on leather. The process was used for only a handful of years and was widely popular overseas, although they were used here in the states briefly. Generally they did not fare well due to their delicate nature and are rarely found without numerous condition flaws. This example is however an exception. It is flawless and is without a doubt, one of the best quality specimens I have encountered. With the exception of a small mat rub to the left side, this one is pristine. One of the finest examples you will find of this rare format!
