Description

Widely published view of a Confederate soldier which met his fate in the trenches of Fort Mahone. This view shows the soldier frozen exactly where he fell, laying in the muddy trenches of the fort. Published by Anthony and photographed by T.C. Roche. Thomas Roche arrived on the scene one day after union forces took Confederate Fort Mahone, just 6 days before Appomattox. The photograph was taken on April 2 of 1865, just one day after the assault. This one does still retain the original descriptive tag on the reverse.
