Description

Widely published view of a Confederate soldier which met his fate at Petersburg. This view shows the soldier frozen exactly where he fell, laying within the fort after a shell fragment struck the young man. Published by Anthony and photographed by T.C. Roche. Thomas Roche arrived on the scene one day after union forces took Confederate Fort Mahone, just 6 days before Appomattox. The photograph was taken on April 2 of 1865, just one day after the assault. This one does still retain the original descriptive tag on the reverse.
