Description
Excellent pocket bible identified to Samuel Fuller of the 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. This example has a publication date of 1862 by the American Bible Society. Samuel would muster with Company A, enlisting on Christmas Eve, 1863. He would join the regiment near the end of February, 1864, in the field at Nashville where the regiment was performing provost duty. They would briefly move to Chattanooga before returning to Nashville where they would perform provost duty for the remainder of the war. Samuel would miss the hard fighting which the 9th Michigan had endured prior to his arrival. He would be mustered out of service in September of 1865 seeing no combat. There are multiple inscriptions written by Samuel on the interior of this bible. Inside the front cover reads “Mr. Samuel Fuller’s Book, Lenox, Macomb County, Michigan. Co. A. 9 Mich. Inft. V. V.”. The following page is inscribed “Inlisted Dec. 24th, 1863. Discharged at Nashville Tennessee the fiftenth day of September, 1865 by reason of close of the war”. A second inscription has been glued onto the following page, presumably by a family member of Samuel’s reading “Samuel Fuller born July 8th, 1842 in the town of Clarkson, Monroe Co. State of N.Y.”. A final inscription graces the inside of the back cover of the bible which reads identical to the inscription he wrote inside the front cover. This example is in excellent condition. All the pages are intact and the binding is solid. Really nice example from a state you don’t see very often.
