Description
Simply superb, sixth plate tintype of this Federal soldier striking a very unique and intriguing pose. Beautiful studio portrait as this infantry private who sits dressed in his infantry frock and cap while cradling a M1840 sword in his arms. Propped up against the table for show is a large musket. I would tend to think that both weapons were most likely photographer’s props. Interestingly, a child’s high chair appears in the photograph as well, which the soldier has propped his foot on the bottom rung. Whether there is some significance to it’s presence, one can only speculate, but I have never seen one used in this manner before. The image has been beautifully tinted as well. From the table cloth to his blue trousers. Even the stock of the musket has been tinted brown and one can see a flower motif painted along the back rest of the high chair. Just an all around beautiful and unique image. Housed in a full leatherette case with a taped spine.
