Description
Outstanding sixth plate tintype of of a member from the 5th Ohio Light Artillery. Dressed in a sack coat with corporals chevrons, he sports a McDowell pattern cap with embroidered artillery insignia and the numeral “5” worn on the front of the cap. Wearing a pair of leather gauntlets with tarred cuffs, he draws his sword from the scabbard. He is also armed with two revolvers which are tucked into the belt, one of which appears to be a Lefaucheux. This image was found with script of paper from the 1960’s or 70’s reading “Ephraim Grunden Northern Army Civil War Age 20 – 1863 Alice Cooks father”. This image is believed to be Ephraim’s brother, Perry rather than Ephraim himself. Ephraim would serve along side his brothers Perry and Samuel. All of which would serve in the 5th Ohio Light Artillery. Only one of the three brothers would achieve the rank of corporal and that would be Perry. I think it can be safely assumed that this is in fact Perry as opposed to Ephraim. Perry would be present and take part in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, Jackson, Mississippi and the capture of Little Rock, Arkansas. This does come with service records on Perry as well as some genealogical paper work. Housed in a full leatherette case. Super image!
