Description
Wonderful little ninth plate ruby ambrotype of a young Virginia rebel soldier with the worst cowlick in history! Not yet old enough to grow a mustache, he is shown here photographed in the studio of a known photographer who operated a studio located in Winchester, Virginia. I suspect this is a member of the 4th Virginia Infantry who served as part of the Stonewall Brigade and were in fact raised in Winchester. Known images of members of the regiment are dressed in shirts of a similar pattern. Variations would have differed from company to company with each creating their own unique yet similar pattern. The individual shown here is dressed in a light blue “battleshirt”. A wide collar is edged in black felt as are the cuffs, facing of the jacket and two large false pockets. Light blue tinting to the shirt remains visible with some oxidation to the plate showing. Minor mat rubs. Housed in a half leatherette case.
