Description
Three page Civil War letter. Dated, “Baltimore Co. Oct. the 9th Camp Gram”. This example is written by a subject only known as “Charles” and is addressed to his mother. The letter mostly discusses family members and matters back home with intermittent details about military life. In one instance, Charles states, “writing I am lying on my belly on the ground and I have eat so much horse meat that my ears have grown a foot or more”. In another instance he is discussing the size of the hogs back home stating, “I bet those hogs are as big as” drew as small picture of an elephant with large tusks! There is an old pencil notation on the last page that reads, “Read by daughter Sarah Emily Carver Perry- Bennett”. While the identity of Charles is not entirely known, he states in the letter that his bed fellow is a man by the name of “Albert Holmes”. That coupled with the name of the daughter may provide the information necessary to identify the soldier. Very nice letter written in ink and very legible.
