Description

Wonderful, early war, clear glass ambrotype of an unidentified Maine volunteer. This in all likelihood is a member of the 1st Maine Infantry who were issued a 7 button grey frock and matching grey trousers. The uniforms were extremely disliked by the men. They were incredibly hot and made of very heavy material and miserable to drill in. By early July of 1861, many of the men purchased new uniforms. Additionally, members of the regiment were issued these “bridle leather” accouterments which this subject wears on both the cartridge box and waist belt. The strap for a haversack is also shown here worn over the shoulder with the buckle present. Pinned to the front of his cap is a small pin which appears to be an eagle carrying a flag and staff. A 3-month unit, the 1st Maine would serve it’s entire term in the Defense of Washington. Many of the men from the regiment would go on to serve in additional Maine units following their discharge for the 1st Maine.
