Description

Nice cabinet card view of the 1st Ohio Light Artillery monument located on Little Round Top at the Gettysburg National Military Park. The monument was dedicated by the State of Ohio in 1887 to honor the battery’s participation in the Battle of Gettysburg. Battery L was commanded by Captain Frank C. Gibbs and was attached to the Artillery Brigade of the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac. The rear of the monument reads, “Battery L 1st Ohio Light Artillery July 2. 3. 1863. Arriving on the field at 8 a.m. July 2, went into position under a  brisk skirmish fire on the extreme  right of Wolf Hill. Afterwards  moved to north slope of Little  Round Top, and there became hotly engaged with Longstreet’s Corps then trying to turn the left.  Held same position July 3.”. This card is by well known Gettysburg photographer William Tipton. Measures 8.5″ x5.25″.
