Description

Carte view identified as Assistant Surgeon Lewis Hodgkins of the 68th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Lewis would be commissioned into the regiment in August, 1862, serving until June of 1865. The regiment would lose 150 men during their term of service, fighting at such places as Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Nashville, and a handful of others. Lewis was no doubt kept busy during those 3 years of campaigning attending to his men. This view is not signed, but a similar view of Lewis that is signed is held in the collection of the Library of Congress. This view came from the personal album of Captain John Pugh Green who would serve as captain and assistant adjutant general to General Thomas Kane and others. Back marked by Brady.
