Description

Near full length pose of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh. Thomas previously served during the war with Mexico, and for gallant conduct in the battle of Buena Vista was promoted to a lieutenancy. At the commencement of the Civil War he entered the service as lieutenant-colonel of the 45th Pennsylvania Infantry and was subsequently promoted to the rank of colonel of the regiment. In March of 1863, he was made a brigadier-general of volunteers but later that year on August 14, 1863, he would succumb to congestive fever in acquired during the campaign in Mississippi. This view bears an old pencil inscription on the reverse reading, “Col. Thos. Welsh Commanding 45th Regt Pa. Vols”. There is some wear to this one with soiling and a few small creases. Back marked out of Philadelphia.
