Description
Beautiful and pristine 6th plate ruby ambrotype of brothers Anthony and Paul Gase of the 57th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The two brothers are photographed here seated with their sister Catherine. German immigrants, the two brothers would muster with “H” Company on November 8, 1861. Both brothers would survive the war with Paul mustering out of service in November, 1864, and Anthony the following year in August. Organized in Findlay, Ohio and attached to the Army of the Tennessee, the regiment would see no shortage of the fighting that transpired over the next 4 years. They would fight in nearly 20 engagements. From Shiloh to Bentonville and everywhere in between, and both would survive miraculously unscathed. Beautiful clarity to this view without a flaw to be seen. This image surfaced in Findlay, Ohio where the regiment was raised and has a small note from the antique gallery where the image was originally sold which identifies the trio as well as some of their family history. Housed in a full patriotic leatherette case with the US flag embossed on the front cover.
