Description

Killer carte view showing a portion of the four gun Confederate artillery battery known as Cheeves Point Battery. The fortification was built on the southeastern shore of James Island during the summer of 1863. The battery, along with the rest of Charleston’s defenses would be evacuated in February, 1865. The scene was photographed by George Bernard not long after Charleston had been evacuated by Confederate forces. This view shows one of the massive Rodman guns that made up the four gun battery along with several civilians posed with the gun. Slightly trimmed along the right side. Back marked by Anthony. Great carte view!
